INSTRUCTOR:
RAE SNYDER

LOCATION:
WHITAKER PONDS NATURAL AREA

Enjoy a slow, gentle 1/2-mile loop in this verdant oasis surrounded by industrial NE Portland. Migration will be in full swing, and there's bound to be plenty to take in! A relaxed pace will allow us the opportunity to be mindful of our presence in this habitat, listen intently to birdsong and allow birds to feel comfortable giving us a glimpse of their daily lives. We will take time to enjoy looking at common birds as well as rarer ones, with the objective of everyone getting a chance to see or hear the bird. Together we will learn what the birds will teach us!

Accessibility notes, as per Birdability Map:
Accessibility rating = 4/5. There is an accessible parking place, which does not have room for a ramp. Curb cuts are present to move from parking lot to trail or sidewalk. Parking surface is paved. Ramp slopes are perfect; for every inch the ramp rises, it extends out 12 inches (1:12 ratio). Accessible portable restrooms are available. Trail surface is loose crushed stone/gravel. Trail slopes are manageable; they follow the 1:20 ratio. There are no benches along the trail or on the dock, but there is seating in the pagoda.

Public transit:
TriMet bus #75 makes a stop at the corner of NE 47th Avenue and Columbia Blvd and visitors can walk north from there to the park entrance.

What to bring:
- An open mind, eye, and ear! Patience!
- Binoculars
- A scope if you have one, but not necessary! Rae will bring one to share.
- Dress appropriately for the weather forecast. Layers can be very helpful with the temperature changes throughout the morning.

About the instructor:

Rae Snyder was made and grown in Oregon. They care deeply about the earth; our relationship to it and to all species who share it—though, they are especially fond of birds. They believe in respecting birds as individuals and their habitats as their own—birds aren't here for us! Rae is passionate about creating and supporting safe spaces for birders of all abilities, cultures, genders, identities, etc. They offer their knowledge of birds which comes from years of experience in the field as well as wildlife rehab, but they believe that all, no matter their level of experience, have something valuable to offer.
